ABOUT ABWI

WHAT IS ABWI?

Established over 10 years ago, the Australasian Bottled Water Institute (ABWI) is the peak industry association & certification organisation for water bottlers and suppliers in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands.

WHAT ARE ABWI'S OBJECTIVES?

ABWI's primary goal is to expand awareness and use of bottled water and ensure consumers enjoy safe, high quality, good tasting bottled water.

ABWI works closely with its member companies, international affiliates, government regulators, bureaucrats and the media to achieve its objectives.  These are:

  • To promote the use of bottled water
  • To assist members to fulfill and if possible exceed government requirements, and to attain and maintain the highest standards of quality.
  • To encourage self-regulation and foster technical expertise within the industry.
  • To represent members' interests to government regulators and the media.
  • To communicate with other international bottled water industry groups, and stay abreast of overseas trends and developments.
  • To act as an authoritive source of information on all types of bottled water production, quality issues, industry trends, and consumer issues.

WHO ARE MEMBERS OF ABWI?

ABWI Membership is made up of large and small producers of packaged water and suppliers to those companies.

ABWI bottler members produce a range of packaged waters.  This includes but not limited to:

  • drinking water
  • mineralised water
  • rain water
  • glacier water
  • packaged water
  • spring water
  • mineral water
  • purified water
  • table water

ABWI membership is of itself an indication of that bottler's commitment to the provision of the highest quality bottled water products to their respective markets and it is recognised as such by food and beverages regulators the world over.

WHAT IS THE ICBWA?

The International Council of Bottled Water Associations (ICBWA), is a membership organisation created to represent the bottled water industry worldwide.  The ICBWA is currently composed of six regional association members, each of which covers a separate geographical territory.  Through this structure, the ICBWA represents over 1,567 companies in 121 countries throughout the world.

ABWI is the regional member of the ICBWA, with coverage responsibility for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania.   ABWI's certification program is the only program in Australasia based on annual independent plant audits recognised by the ICBWA. Through the ICBWA, the Institute is the voice of the bottled water industry to international regulatory agencies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
